The CMC Weighs In - Washington Winters PDF Print E-mail
Growing up in Southern California and delighting in it’s beaches and desert, this California girl had quite a shock when first being introduced to DC winters.  Now, for those of you who are from cold and snowy climates who barely blink an eye at 8 feet of snow overnight and months of icy temperatures, let me apologize for my whining; but it’s all relative.

I used to get cold at about 65 degrees.  After a few DC winters and learning to layer the clothes and get thicker soled shoes, I’m doing much better.  I now know the definition of wintery mix,  snow trains and black ice.  The peaceful silence during a snowfall and the pristine look of a road or field before the snow plows descend is magnificent.  Trees in their stark bareness have new angles of artful lines and contrasting colors. And when the sun shines on the new fallen snow, there is a different color to the air that Southern California never experiences.  I now feel that 48 degrees and sunny is a beautiful and balmy day! Our United States Capitol, the White House and the monuments all take on a new and even more formidable and authoritative stance when seen in the harshness of winter.

“To appreciate the beauty of a snow flake, it is necessary to stand out in the cold.” – author unknown

So don’t let the weather delay a trip to Washington DC.  The sites and the history and the nip in the air will exhilarate you!
